The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the main organization of Chinese industries, said on Friday that the sugar production in the country rose by 1.5 percent in the first seven months (October to April) of the current marketing year beginning from October 2018 to 31.11 million tonnes reached at. This figure is 9 lakh 36 thousand tonnes more than the previous year i.e. the sugar season 2017-18. In the year 2017-18, sugar production was 31 million and 83 thousand tonnes. Not only that, Isma has said that during the current marketing season, total sugar production touching a new record high of 3.3 million tonnes.
This figure is 9 lakh 36 thousand tonnes more than last year i.e. the sugar season 2017-18, according to ISMA, between October 2018 and April this year, sugar mills have produced 30.11 million tonnes of sugar. By April 30, only 100 mills were in operation. The top three major sugar producing states of the country - Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka - produced 10.12 million tonnes, 1.07 million tonnes and 43.2 lakh tonnes respectively during the October-April period of marketing year 2018-19.
ISMA has expressed the estimate, "Therefore, sugar production is expected to be around 3.3 million tonnes for the entire country, which will be about 5,00,000 tonnes more than last year." In the last 15-20 days, sugar production has slowed down, a large number of sugar mills are closing down the work with much faster than previous Chinese sessions.
ISMA said that in the end of marketing year 2018-19, sugar stocks will be at a high level of about 1.47 million tonnes keeping in view the stock remaining 1.07 million tonnes of October 1, 2018. This major industry organization also indicated that due to the lack of rainfall in the major producer state of Maharashtra, sugar production is likely to fall in the marketing year 2019-20 due to the production of cane shear for the production of atheneol and the production of ethanol.
